Bookkeeper vs. accountant: what's the difference?

They work with the same numbers, but they are different jobs with different training, different price tags, and different career paths. Here's the plain-English split.

The one-sentence version

Bookkeepers record; accountants interpret. The bookkeeper keeps the day-to-day financial record accurate — transactions categorized, accounts reconciled, months closed. The accountant takes that record and works above it: tax strategy, financial statements for lenders, audits, and advice.

Side by side

Daily work. A bookkeeper lives in the ledger: invoices, bills, bank feeds, reconciliation, payroll runs, monthly close. An accountant works mostly at quarter- and year-boundaries: adjusting entries, tax filings, and analysis.

Training. Bookkeeping requires no degree and no license in any state — skills and optional certifications (like the free QuickBooks ProAdvisor credential) carry the weight. Accounting typically means a bachelor's degree, and the CPA license adds the 150-credit-hour requirement, the CPA exam, and continuing education.

Cost to a business. This is why both jobs exist: bookkeepers cost a fraction of what accountants do. A small business that pays accountant rates for transaction entry is burning money; one that skips bookkeeping hands its accountant a shoebox — and pays accountant rates to sort it.

Pay. Median bookkeeper pay is $50,670/yr (BLS, May 2025); accountants and CPAs earn substantially more — in exchange for years of schooling, exam gauntlets, and licensing. Different investment, different return, different timeline.

Which path fits you?

If you want to be earning within months, not years — working with real businesses, possibly self-employed, with a free certification path — bookkeeping is the fast, open door. And it is not a dead end: many accountants and CPAs started in the books, and the fundamentals transfer completely. If you later want the degree-and-license route, everything you learn here comes with you.
