Last updated: June 2026. Your privacy matters. Here's exactly what we collect, what we don't, and how we use it.
When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, and password (stored as a one-way hash — we never see your actual password). This is handled through our authentication provider, Clerk.
Payments are processed by Lemon Squeezy, our Merchant of Record. They collect your payment details directly — we never see or store your full credit card number. We receive a record of successful payments, subscription status, and billing email.
To make the platform work, we track your study progress: modules viewed, quiz scores, time spent, topic mastery levels, streaks, and personal best scores. This data is tied to your account and used to personalize your learning experience.
Questions you ask the Ask Claude feature are sent to a third-party AI service (Anthropic) for processing. We may store conversation history to improve the feature and for quality assurance. Do not share sensitive personal or financial information in these conversations.
Like most websites, we automatically collect browser type, device type, IP address, and pages visited. This helps us improve the service and detect security issues.
We don't sell your personal information to anyone. Ever.
To operate the platform, we use these trusted services. Each handles your data according to their own privacy policies:
We use essential cookies to keep you logged in and remember your preferences. We do not use third-party advertising cookies or tracking pixels. We do not track you across other websites.
We may use privacy-respecting analytics to understand how the platform is used in aggregate (which features are popular, which need improvement). No individual user data is shared with advertisers.
You have the right to:
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@bookkeepingcompanion.com.
We retain your account data while your account is active. If you cancel your subscription, we retain your account data for 12 months in case you choose to return, then delete or anonymize it unless you request earlier deletion.
Payment records are retained as required by applicable tax and accounting laws (typically 7 years).
We use industry-standard security measures: encrypted connections (HTTPS), encrypted password storage, regular security reviews, and access controls limiting who can see your data internally. No system is 100% secure, but we take security seriously and continuously improve our practices.
The Bookkeeping Companion is not intended for users under 16. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 16. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
The platform is hosted in the United States. If you access it from outside the U.S., your data may be transferred to and processed in the U.S. By using the Service, you consent to this transfer.
EU/UK users: You have rights under GDPR, including the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. We rely on legitimate interests and contractual necessity as our legal bases for processing.
California users: You have rights under CCPA, including the right to know what information is collected, the right to delete, and the right to opt out of "sales" (we don't sell data).
We may update this Privacy Policy. When we make material changes, we'll notify active users by email and update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the Service after changes means you accept the updated policy.
