It's the credential employers and clients look for when hiring QuickBooks® help — and Intuit gives both the training and the exam away free. Here's exactly what it is, how to earn it, and how to study for it using what you're already learning here.

The QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor certification is Intuit's own credential proving you know your way around QuickBooks Online. There are two tiers: QuickBooks Online Level 1 — the core certification most people mean when they say "ProAdvisor certified" — and Level 2, the advanced tier for deeper, messier scenarios. (Before late 2024 these were called "Core" and "Advanced," so you'll still see those names around.)
Why bother? Three reasons. Employers hiring bookkeepers and office staff use it as a quick filter for real QuickBooks skill. Freelance bookkeepers who certify get an official badge to put on their website and a listing in Intuit's Find-a-ProAdvisor directory, where small businesses go looking for help. And the process of preparing for it forces the kind of end-to-end QuickBooks fluency that's hard to fake.
One thing it is not: an accounting license. It certifies software proficiency, not accounting credentials — which is exactly why it's achievable for career-changers and beginners who put in the practice.
Inside ProAdvisor Academy, the Level 1 certification is organized into five courses, each with its own section of the exam. Here's how each one lines up with the modules in our course — finish the module, practice the topic, and you've built the foundation that course tests.
| Academy Level 1 course | What it covers | Build the foundation with |
|---|---|---|
| Getting Started | Navigating QuickBooks Online, setting up a company file, and structuring the chart of accounts | Modules 5, 6 & 7 |
| Sales and Customers | Invoices, sales receipts, receiving payments, and customer workflows | Module 8 |
| Expenses and Vendors | Expenses, bills, bill payments, and vendor workflows | Module 9 |
| Banking | Bank feeds, matching transactions, bank rules, and reconciling accounts | Module 11 |
| Period End | Reports, reviewing the books, and closing out a period | Modules 12 & 14 |
Underneath all five courses sit the fundamentals the Academy assumes you already have — account types, debits and credits, cash vs. accrual. That's our Modules 1-4, and it's exactly the gap that trips up beginners who jump straight into Intuit's training. (Payroll, by the way, isn't part of Level 1 — Intuit offers it as a separate Specialty certification, which our Module 13 gives you a running start on.)
Because the exam is scenario-based — and open book — hands-on practice beats passive reading. Candidates who've actually worked inside a QBO file consistently do better, which is the philosophy this whole platform is built on: our scenario simulator, practice exams, and games exist precisely to build the reflexes the exam tests. Intuit also offers a free 30-day QBO trial if you want a sandbox to click around in.
Yes. The QBOA account, the ProAdvisor Academy training, the exam, and the badge cost nothing. What you invest is study time.
Most people prepare and pass within one to two weeks of part-time study. If you're brand new to bookkeeping, give yourself longer — build the foundations first, then sprint at the exam.
Level 1 first — it's the prerequisite in practice, and Intuit recommends settling in for a few months before attempting Level 2. For most job-seekers and new bookkeepers, Level 1 is the milestone that matters.
ProAdvisor Academy also offers a free Intuit Bookkeeping Certification — roughly 30 hours of self-paced accounting fundamentals, aimed at career switchers. It's legitimate and worth knowing about. Where we differ: our course is built around practice — games, scenarios, adaptive quizzes, an AI tutor — because watching lessons alone rarely sticks. Many learners do both: build the reflexes here, then collect Intuit's credentials to prove them.
No — plenty of working bookkeepers aren't certified. But it's one of the cheapest, fastest credibility signals available in this field, and if you're job-hunting or client-hunting, it pulls real weight.
Think of us as the foundation layer. Intuit's official training assumes you already think in bookkeeping terms; our course builds that thinking from zero, in plain English, with practice at every step. Do our modules, then Intuit's Level 1 materials, then the exam — in that order.
Right here: take our free Level 1 Readiness Check — 20 original scenario questions organized by the five Academy courses, with a per-domain score and a study plan. Our questions will never include real exam content (those "actual questions and answers" PDFs floating around violate Intuit's exam terms and can get a certification revoked — steer clear). And inside the app, Domain Drills are live on the Learning Path tab — short per-domain practice runs that save your best score for each of the five courses.
