How much do bookkeepers make?

The real numbers, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics — and the honest explanation of what moves an individual bookkeeper above or below them.

The headline number

The median annual pay for bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks in the United States is $50,670 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025), across roughly 1.5 million jobs. Half of bookkeepers earn more than that, half less — and the spread is wide, because this is a field where skills, not seniority, set the price.

What actually moves the number

Software fluency. A bookkeeper who runs QuickBooks® end to end — bank feeds, reconciliation, month-end close — is doing a different job than a data-entry clerk, and gets paid like it.

Certification. The free QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification is the most common door-opener; it costs nothing but study time and signals competence before you have references. (Full cost breakdown here.)

Metro and industry. Big-metro and specialized-industry books (construction job costing, restaurants, e-commerce) pay above generalist small-town rates — though remote work is flattening this fast.

Employee vs. freelance. Staff roles pay a wage; freelance bookkeepers typically charge per client per month, and a modest roster of well-served small businesses can pass a staff salary — with no ceiling but your capacity.

The trend to know

BLS projects overall clerk employment to decline about 6% from 2025 to 2035 as software automates the typing. The distribution of that decline is the point: routine data-entry roles shrink while the judgment work — running the software, catching its errors, explaining results to owners — concentrates in fewer, better-paid hands. Training and certification are how you end up on the right side of that line.
